The Value of Joe Johnson

Last night was a sensational night to be a Nets fan. Down 3 at the end of the fourth, Joe Johnson hit a game tying 3 to force overtime. Then he hit a buzzer beater in overtime to win the game.

And yet, you hear the same refrains about Joe this season from much of the media. He is overrated, overpaid. He is having a down year, not shooting well, posting a low PER. The common Net fan retort are his clutch shots.

Now, I present you with another comeback. Not only do we know Joe Johnson is good, but the stats indeed back it up.

Josh Smith to Brooklyn?

Per @MaxLuckan on twitter, the Nets are front runners to secure Josh Smith. And according to Chris Broussard, the Hawks have a 60 % chance of dealing Smith and the Nets are interested.

It’s easy to see why Atlanta wants to deal Smith. After years of chasing a title behind Joe Johnson, the Hawks dealt him to Brooklyn in a cost cutting move. Danny Ferry has brought about a new era in Atlanta where the team hopes to be more fiscally responsible: something the new CBA practically mandates. Childress Waived; Trades A Comin?

At his final presser, Avery Johnson said, “I really thought we were going to meet and talk about what was gonna start happening around Jan. 15 when we could make a couple of moves.”

January 15 is not coincidentally the date that Kris Humphries is trade eligible. With Deron Joe and Brook not being dealt unless there’s a major shakeup, and Gerald having 4 years on his deal, Humphries is the most likely big piece the Nets can deal to get better. With rules requiring salaries in trades to match, the Nets have to deal a high salary player to bring in another, which necessitates a Humphries trade to bring back significant value.

D-Will or D-Won’t?: Dissecting Deron’s Struggles

With Avery Johnson fired, it is clear as day: Deron Williams’ career is at a crossroads.

Mikhail Prokhorov bought the Nets to bring stars to Brooklyn. Billy King responded: he got Deron Williams, a man who led 51, 54, 48, and 53 games per year over four years. Prokhorov had his star. Or does he? Deron is shooting under 40% and under 30% from 3 on a 3-10 team in December. This comes with a roster Deron handpicked: from his star backcourt mate in Joe Johnson to his bench full of guys sharing his agent, Jeff Schwartz.

So, what’s wrong with Deron Williams? Let’s take a look.
